February 18 a common critique of religion...How many times have you heard something like this...
"I'm not religious because I don't want to be blindly following some old man in a pointy hat."
or this...
Atheists should be proud, not apologetic, because atheism is evidence of a healthy, independent mind. (Dawkins, Richard. Preface The God Delusion.)
Let's just say that human beings have the choice of whether or not to be religious. People can choose whether to believe. People can choose whether to identify with a particular social group - obviously, if you choose a belief, then you choose the consequences of making that choice. So if you don't want to follow Christ, or Buddha, or Ronald McDonald or whoever, then don't choose that religion. See? You can still choose! Atheists aren't the only ones with an independent mind...
A: Oh I see you're wearing a new pair of Lululemon pants. Why do you have to spend an arm and a leg to get those pants that all the other cool wannabees wear? Don't you wanna be independent and not just do what everyone else is doing?
B: Hey I paid for these myself! I'm choosing to buy this stuff - I don't HAVE to. If I wanna wear Lululemon, I pay for it! I'm free to buy whatever I want aren't I? I know they're expensive but I accept that. Stop mocking my purchases.
A: And stop mocking my religion.
February 17 a go at Buddhism...BUDDHA VS. JESUS Buddha • Buddha is dead.• In many ways the Buddha is a mystery (no contemporary biographies exist)—“apart from the legends we know very little about the circumstances of his life.”• Teachings uncertain.• Buddha was only a man: “Notwithstanding his own objectivity toward himself, there was constant pressure during his lifetime to turn him into a god. He rebuffed all these categorically, insisting that he was human in every respect. He made no attempt to conceal his temptations and weaknesses, how difficult it had been to attain enlightenment, now narrow the margin by which he had won through, how infallible he still remained.”• Non-theistic worldview.• A way-shower; Buddha as a person is unnecessary for achieving enlightenment.• Encouraged men to follow a philosophy.• Never appealed to faith.• Rejected God.• Undogmatic.• Offered an alleged way between the temporal and the eternal.
Jesus • Jesus is alive.• Jesus was a historic person of whom four reliable, early biographies were penned. “It is a historic fact that Jesus Christ lived and taught what the New Testament says He taught.”• Teachings certain.• Jesus is incarnate God, “I am the light of the world”; “I am the way, the truth and the Life”; “He who believes in me will never die”; “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” “I and the Father are one.” “You believe in God, believe also in Me.” “All that the father has is Mine.” “All power and authority in heaven and earth have been given to me.”• Theistic worldview.• The Savior; salvation is impossible apart from the Person of Jesus.• Encouraged men to follow Him.• Stressed the importance of faith in God and Himself. (Jn. 17.3)• Called God His own Father.• Dogmatic.• Taught He was the only way between the temporal and the eternal.

MANILA, Philippines
Philippine police were given additional orders for Valentine's Day: be on alert for overly enthusiastic affection in public places. Police director for operations Wilfredo Garcia on Wednesday instructed officers to monitor parking lots, parks and other public places for couples exhibiting a little too much passion on Cupid's day. In past years on Valentine's Day, couples have been caught making love in the back seats of cars in prominent areas such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines along Manila Bay, Garcia said. "If it's simply kissing, that's all right," said Garcia. "(But) the people we've arrested there in the past were engaged in actual sex already." The Philippines is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, and although a conservative society where divorce is outlawed, extramarital affairs are common. Manila police also were ordered to watch motels for violations of city ordinance banning "short time" stays, Garcia said. On the southwestern island of Palawan, famous for its pristine white-sand beaches, 100 Filipino couples waded through shallow waters to plant mangrove trees before tying the knot in a mass Valentine's Day wedding. "This is part of our showing our care for nature. That is why we dubbed it as a love affair with nature," Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn said. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/02/14/asia/AS-GEN-Philippines-Valentines-Day.php February 12 another go at atheism: Wikipedia vs. the VaticanI thought it might be fun to contrast arguments from Wikipedia's Atheism page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism) and the Vatican's "Compendium of the Catechism" page (http://www.vatican.va/archive/compendium_ccc/documents/archive_2005_compendium-ccc_en.html).

Friday, February 09, 2007 Postsecondary students across Canada are in dire need of a lesson in Real Life 101. After staging nationwide protests this week demanding a tuition freeze, students shared sob stories about having to live on Kraft Dinner and vodka coolers. OK, alcohol consumption was conveniently overlooked during the rallies, but campus bars seem to be surviving, despite these "titanic" tuition fees. Some students even went so far as to call for the eradication of tuition fees altogether. Perhaps our left-leaning college and university professors have been reticent in apprising young people of a few hard truths. Allow me to burst a few bubbles. First, no one "owes" you a postsecondary education. You have enjoyed free schooling both at the elementary and high-school levels. If you seek higher education, prepare to pay. Second, postsecondary education is already largely subsidized by taxpayers. Why should hard-working stiffs making $12 an hour at a factory job hand over even more of their paycheques just so that you can study art history? As it stands now, you are only required to pay a small percentage of the overall cost. And compared to students in the U.S. you have it easy. Third, there are scholarships, bursaries and student loans available to you to help ease the burden of tuition payments. There are also things called summer and part-time jobs that you may want to look into. Fourth, if you don't see much value in a postsecondary education, why bother? Presumably, you wish to obtain a diploma or a degree in the hopes of earning a decent salary one day. If you are studying something worthwhile, then paying back your student loans shouldn't be much of a problem. If you're studying something silly just to "experience" college or university life, grow up. The province is in desperate need of skilled trades people (who make pretty good money, by the way). A trained plumber or electrician is going to have far more job security than a poet [emphasis mine]. Last but not least, you will take your schooling more seriously if you have to pay for it. Believe it or not, the kids who get a free ride thanks to the Bank of Mom and Dad are often the ones who skip class, forget to hand in papers and participate in numerous pub crawls. These are usually the same kids who flunk out after one or two semesters. The students who actually pay for part of their education generally have more incentive to study and get good marks. Our daughter is still in diapers. But, if she chooses to pursue a postsecondary education one day, we will do our best to help her out. Even if we won the lottery, however, she would still be responsible for some of her tuition and living expenses. Besides math and science, English and literature, we think it's important that she learns a few life lessons: Nothing is free, life isn't fair, and you usually get what you pay for. February 07 Tim Hortons revolutionizes the cappuccino! As dumb as that above title sounds, it is 100% true! Think about it, no longer do you have to spend an arm and a leg at Starbucks if you want a high quality cappuccino. Now that same drink (and lattes and espresso shots) are now available, for way cheaper and FASTER, at Tim Hortons!!! Yeah Tims uses a machine to make them but so what, it still comes out the same! (And yes I do know what a real cappuccino is supposed to taste like, I used to make them all the time at a specialty coffee shop.)
Starbucks is going to go out of business. |
